Can ITIN Holders Get Life Insurance in the United States?

ITIN4 min read

Quick summary

  • Yes. Carriers exist that accept an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number in place of a Social Security Number on a life insurance application.
  • Which carriers accept an ITIN, and what they ask for alongside it, varies between them. That variation is the whole of the difficulty.
  • The products available are the same categories available to anyone: term life, final expense and Indexed Universal Life.
  • Synergy Insurance Group is ITIN friendly and licensed in all 50 states.

An ITIN is a tax processing number issued by the IRS to people who need to file a return but are not eligible for a Social Security Number. It is not an immigration document and it does not confer status.

Whether an insurance application can be written against one is a carrier question, not a legal one — some accept an ITIN, some do not, and the ones that do differ in what else they ask for. Working with an agency that knows which is which is the practical part.

Synergy Insurance Group is based in Orlando, Florida, is licensed in all 50 states, and is never locked into one carrier. Call 407-434-0400 to talk it through with someone licensed.

What types of cover are available?

The same categories that are available to anyone:

Term life insurance — cover for a set period, typically 10, 20 or 30 years, at a level premium. Suited to a defined obligation, such as the years a household depends on one income or the life of a mortgage.

Final expense insurance — a small whole life policy written to meet the costs that arise immediately after a death. No medical exam is required for most applicants between ages 50 and 85.

Indexed Universal Life — permanent cover with a cash value whose interest is credited according to the movement of a market index, within a floor and a cap. If the index falls, the crediting rate does not go negative and the index loss is not credited against the value you have already built. The policy has its own internal charges, and those do not stop in a period when crediting does.

Why an IUL comes up often in this context

Not because it is the best product — that depends entirely on the person — but because of one structural fact: an IUL is not an employer plan.

Many people who file with an ITIN work in industries where employer-sponsored retirement plans are uncommon: construction, truck driving, home healthcare, food service. A policy you fund yourself does not depend on an employer offering one, and it does not end when the job does.

That is a point about how the product is structured, not a recommendation to buy it. An IUL costs more than term, carries charges that erode cash value in the early years, and can lapse if it is underfunded. Whether it fits is a conversation to have against your own circumstances with someone licensed.

What the application involves

The process is the standard one, with additional documentation. Carriers commonly ask for:

  • your ITIN assignment letter from the IRS
  • a valid government-issued photo ID — a passport, consular ID or driver's licence
  • evidence of where you live, such as a utility bill or a lease
  • your health history

Some carriers ask for more — bank statements or filed tax returns are the usual additions. What is asked for is set by the carrier, not by us, and it is the thing that most often differs between one application and another.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ITIN? A tax processing number issued by the IRS to individuals who need to file a US tax return but are not eligible for a Social Security Number.

Are the rates different? Life insurance premiums are priced on age, health and the amount of cover — not on which taxpayer number appears on the form. What can differ between carriers is the underwriting process itself and the documentation required, rather than the rate for a given risk.

Does applying with an ITIN change the death benefit? No. Once a policy is issued, it pays according to its own terms. The benefit is what the contract says it is.

Which carriers accept an ITIN? It varies, and it changes. That is precisely why it is worth going through an agency that is not tied to a single carrier — the answer is different depending on where the application is sent.

What if I am asked for a document I do not have? Say so early. Carriers differ in what they will accept as evidence, and an alternative that satisfies one may satisfy another. It is a better use of time than submitting an application that stalls.
